A Gallery of Great Art from October

Despite a strange and wild October for all of us, we managed to create lots of amazing art at both Yellow Bird Studios!

We noticed how studio time for our students provided a release of tension and anxiety for some and a sense of stability for others. We were so happy to be part of this for our students and for our community as we all struggled with the aftermath of two hurricanes in our area.

We wanted to share some of the wonderful art that has come out of the studios so that you can appreciate our student's creativity and vision. All of the projects you see are what is called "choice based process art", which is at the core of our philosophy. The reason we feel so strongly about process art, it is coming from the creative minds of our students, not us.

Art educators at all levels, from toddlers to college, understand that art is a creative expression of inner thoughts and feelings, not just a set of techniques to master. Anybody can be taught to copy. Anybody can learn the primary and secondary colors. Anybody can learn to sew a basic stitch. Art is when you take these basics and use them in an original way that is unique to the person.

We also utilize Harvard University's Studio Habits of Mind: "The eight “studio habits of mind” (Develop Craft, Engage & Persist, Envision, Express, Observe, Reflect, Stretch & Explore, Understand Art Worlds) describe the thinking that teachers intend for their students to learn during the process of creating." These attitudes about learning extend way beyond art, to help students think divergently about all areas of study, from science, to math, to language. We want to create thinkers, problemsolvers, inventors, risk takers and visionaries through their studio experience!

We are the ONLY studio in our area that embraces this philosophy in every one of our classes and we are proud of that! It is also why our students love it so much- they are free to be themselves and make their own ideas take flight!
